Does My Small Business Need a Website in India If Customers Already Find Me on WhatsApp and Google Maps?

Adyft Sites Guide

Local SEO & AI Search

No, a small business in India does not strictly need a website if WhatsApp and Google Maps already bring more enquiries than it can handle. But a website does three things those two cannot: it answers the questions people ask before they message you, it lets you appear for searches beyond your map pin, and it gives Google and AI assistants a page of facts to quote. At ₹14,999 plus ₹999 a month for a done-for-you site, it pays for itself if it brings in a handful of extra customers a year, and the maths below shows how to check that for your own business.

What do WhatsApp and Google Maps already do well?

Give them credit first, because they are doing real work. A Google Business Profile is free, it puts you on the map when someone nearby searches, and it shows your hours, photos and reviews. Google says local results depend on relevance, distance and prominence, and that nobody can pay to rank higher in them. WhatsApp turns that interest into a conversation: the customer taps, asks a question, and you reply.

For a kirana store, a tailor, a tea stall or a mobile repair counter, where people walk past and the decision takes a minute, this pair may be all you need. Nobody researches a ₹200 repair for twenty minutes.

What does a website add that WhatsApp and Maps cannot?

JobGoogle Maps pinWhatsApp chatYour own website

Gives AI assistants a source to quotePartlyNo, chats are privateYes, if the facts are written as text
You control the content and it cannot be suspendedGoogle controls the listingYour account can be restrictedYes, on your own domain

The pattern is clear. Maps is a signpost and WhatsApp is a phone line. A website is the shop window that people look into before they decide to walk up and ring the bell.

Who loses customers by not having a website?

The businesses that lose the most are those where the customer compares options before buying. That usually means a bigger spend, a longer relationship or a trust question.

  • 1Clinics, dentists, physiotherapists and diagnostic centres, where people check qualifications and fees.
  • 2Coaching classes and tuition centres, where parents compare results, batches and fees.
  • 3Interior designers, architects and contractors, where a project costs lakhs and people want to see past work.
  • 4Caterers, event planners and banquet halls, where families compare packages per plate.
  • 5Chartered accountants, lawyers and consultants, where clients look for experience and specialisation.
  • 6Anyone selling to other businesses, where a buyer has to forward your details to a manager.

In all of these, a customer who cannot find a fee range, a list of services or proof of past work on a phone screen tends to message the competitor whose information is easier to read. You never see that lost enquiry, which is why it is easy to underestimate.

Does a website help my Google Maps ranking?

Indirectly, yes. Google’s own help page says prominence is based on information Google has about a business from across the web, such as links, articles and directories. A website gives the profile something solid to point to, and pages that describe your services in detail help with relevance, the first of Google’s three factors.

Google matters more in India than almost anywhere. StatCounter put its share of Indian search at 96.63% in September 2026, the highest of the large markets it reports. So when people look you up, they almost certainly use Google, and the website link on your profile is one of the first things they can tap.

What a website cannot do is beat distance. If a customer is 2 km from a competitor and 8 km from you, the map will usually favour the nearer one for a “near me” search. Your website is how you win the searches that are not about distance: a specific service, a specific locality name, a question.

Do AI assistants need a website to recommend my business?

Not strictly, but it makes a big difference. When someone asks a chatbot “which coaching centre in Indiranagar teaches JEE physics on weekends?”, the assistant searches the web and reads pages. Your WhatsApp chats are private and invisible to it. Your map listing holds a few lines. A website page that states your batches, timings, fees and location in plain text gives it something to quote.

There is a technical detail too. OpenAI says sites that block its search crawler, called OAI-SearchBot, will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. A website you control lets you decide that on purpose. A done-for-you provider should allow the search crawlers by default and tell you so.

💡 Keep WhatsApp and Maps. A website does not replace them. It is the page they point to, so the customer arrives already knowing your prices and timings.

How do I work out if a website is worth it in rupees?

Use cost per enquiry. It is the simplest way to compare a website with anything else you spend money on, from pamphlets to paid ads. Here is the calculation with Adyft Sites Starter prices, which include hosting, security and changes, so there are no extra bills to add except the domain.

Year 1Year 2 onwards
Setup fee₹14,999₹0
Monthly fee (₹999 × 12)₹11,988₹11,988
Domain (approximate, in your name)₹500–1,200₹500–1,200
Total for the yearabout ₹28,000about ₹13,000
Per monthabout ₹2,300about ₹1,100
Cost per enquiry at 5 extra enquiries a monthabout ₹460about ₹220
Cost per enquiry at 15 extra enquiries a monthabout ₹155about ₹70

Prices exclude GST where applicable. The enquiry numbers are examples to show the method, not a promise: count your own. Then ask one question. What is one new customer worth to you over a year? For a tuition centre charging ₹3,000 a month, one extra student pays for the whole first year in under ten months. For a caterer, one wedding booking covers it many times over. For a ₹50 snack stall, the maths does not work, and that is a fair answer too.

To count website enquiries, add “Hi, I saw your website” as the pre-filled text on the website’s WhatsApp button. Every chat that starts with that line came from the site. Your monthly visitor report shows how many people visited and which pages they read.

When can I skip a website for now?

Being honest about this matters more than selling one more website. You can reasonably wait if:

  • 1You are already fully booked from repeat customers and word of mouth, and do not want more work.
  • 2Your sale is small, quick and based on footfall, so nobody researches before buying.
  • 3You are still testing the business and might change what you sell in the next few months.
  • 4You have not yet set up your Google Business Profile. Do that first; it is free and takes an evening.

If one of these describes you, get the Business Profile right, collect honest reviews, and come back to the website question when you want to grow.

What is the cheapest way to get a decent website in India?

Published price guides (2026) put a basic freelancer site at about ₹2,999–8,750 and an agency site at ₹12,500–60,000. A DIY builder costs a monthly subscription, and you do all the writing and set-up. The cheapest route in cash is a builder you fill in yourself. The cheapest route in time is someone who writes it for you.

Adyft Sites is built for the second group. You answer questions on WhatsApp, the same app you already run the business on. We write every page, including the free FAQ, Contact and Privacy pages, set the site up to be found on Google, host and secure the site, and send you a visitor report each month. When your timings or prices change, you send a message and we update it. Starter is five pages, live in under seven days, and there are 42 industry designs to choose from before you commit. If you would rather build it yourself on a Sunday, a builder is a perfectly good choice, and our guide to website costs in India compares the options.

Questions about websites, WhatsApp and Google Maps

Can I get customers from Google Maps without a website?

Yes. A free Google Business Profile can bring calls and directions requests on its own. A website adds detail the profile cannot hold and helps you appear for searches beyond your immediate area.

Is a WhatsApp Business catalogue a replacement for a website?

It works well for customers who already have your number. It is not built to be found through Google search, it gives AI assistants little or nothing to read, and new customers cannot browse it before contacting you.

How much does a small business website cost per month in India?

With Adyft Sites, Starter is ₹999 a month after a ₹14,999 setup fee, covering hosting, security, changes and a report. Freelancers often charge less upfront but bill hosting and changes separately.

Will a website bring me more customers?

It depends on whether your customers research before buying. For clinics, coaching, caterers, contractors and professional services it usually helps. Count enquiries from the site for a few months to see the real effect.

Does my website need to be in Hindi or a regional language?

If most of your customers search in a regional language, consider pages in that language. Many urban service businesses work well in English with a few local terms. Write in the language your customers type in.

What should I do first, a website or a Google Business Profile?

The Business Profile, because it is free and quick. Then add a website that the profile links to, with the same name, address and phone number on both.
