Google Ads for Solicitors in the UK — Transparency Rules and Expensive Clicks

Adyft Guide

Google Ads

Legal services in the UK sit in an awkward spot for paid search. The keywords are expensive — solicitor terms are among the costlier categories in UK search, particularly in conveyancing and personal injury — and the profession operates under transparency obligations that most other businesses do not face. The SRA requires firms to publish price and service information for certain categories of work, and advertising that sits inconsistently alongside that published information creates a problem beyond the marketing one. At the same time, this is a category where a single instruction can be worth thousands of pounds and where client acquisition is genuinely difficult, so the firms that get it right have a durable advantage. This guide covers running Google Ads as a UK firm without either wasting the budget or creating a regulatory issue.

Transparency Rules Shape What You Can Advertise

The SRA transparency requirements oblige firms to publish price and service information for specified areas of work on their website. This matters for advertising because your ad, your landing page and your published price information all need to tell the same story.

  • 1Advertised prices must match published information — A "fixed fee conveyancing from £X" advert that does not align with your published pricing is a straightforward inconsistency, and it is the sort of thing that generates complaints from clients and competitors alike.
  • 2Be clear about what is and is not included — Disbursements, VAT and search fees on a conveyancing matter can substantially exceed the headline fee. Advertising a figure that turns out to be a fraction of the real cost is both a transparency problem and a conversion problem when the client finds out.
  • 3"From" pricing must be genuinely available — As in any UK advertising, a meaningful proportion of matters must actually be achievable at the advertised entry price.
  • 4Regulated status should be clear — Clients are entitled to know they are dealing with a regulated firm, and it is a genuine trust advantage over unregulated competitors in areas like will writing.
  • 5The CAP Code applies as well — SRA obligations sit alongside, not instead of, general UK advertising rules. Superlatives and unsubstantiated claims are a problem under both.

💡 Practical approach: build your ad copy from your published price and service information rather than writing it independently and hoping they align. If the published page says one thing and the advert says another, the advert is the one that will be complained about.

Not Every Practice Area Works in Paid Search

This is the calculation most firms skip, and it determines whether the channel is viable at all. Practice areas differ enormously in both click cost and matter value, and the ratio between them decides everything.

Conveyancing — high volume, thin margins, heavy competition

Consistent search demand and a clear transactional trigger, but intense price competition from volume firms and online conveyancers. Works if your cost per instruction is genuinely controlled; painful if not.

Family law — strong intent, sensitive handling

People searching for divorce or child arrangements solicitors are usually ready to instruct. Enquiry handling matters enormously here, because the caller is often distressed and will not chase you.

Wills, probate and private client — good economics

Lower click costs than transactional areas, decent matter values, and a demographic that increasingly searches online. Frequently the best value practice area for a smaller firm.

Employment law — two very different audiences

Employee-side and employer-side searchers need entirely separate campaigns. Combined, you attract the wrong side of every matter.

Personal injury — expensive and crowded

Among the most competitive keywords in UK search, dominated by firms with substantial budgets. A small firm entering here without a specific niche will struggle to buy meaningful visibility.

Enquiry Handling Decides More Than Bidding Does

This is the most consistently underestimated factor in legal paid search. Someone searching for a solicitor is usually dealing with something urgent or distressing, and they will contact more than one firm.

  • 1Answer the phone during the hours you advertise — An unanswered call on an expensive keyword is a direct transfer to a competitor. If reception is stretched, restrict the ad schedule rather than paying for calls nobody takes.
  • 2Train whoever answers to take a proper enquiry — Practice area, jurisdiction, timing and basic conflict screening. A message taken without those details frequently cannot be converted afterwards.
  • 3Respond to web enquiries within the hour — Not the next working day. Response speed correlates more strongly with conversion than almost anything happening inside the ad account.
  • 4Track calls by campaign — Without it you cannot tell which practice areas produce instructions, which makes budget allocation guesswork in an expensive category.
  • 5Follow up once — A meaningful share of enquirers speak to several firms and are still deciding a few days later. One follow-up recovers matters that would otherwise be lost.

Negative Keywords for UK Legal

Free legal help

"Free legal advice," "legal aid," "citizens advice," "pro bono." High volume, and unless you do legal aid work these are pure waste.

Self-help and templates

"DIY will," "template," "form," "do it yourself," "without a solicitor." Research intent from people specifically trying to avoid instructing anyone.

Careers and training

"Training contract," "paralegal jobs," "LPC," "SQE," "law degree," "solicitor salary." Legal ads attract a lot of job-seeker and student traffic.

Complaints about solicitors

"Legal ombudsman," "complaint about solicitor," "negligence claim against." Unless you do professional negligence work, exclude these.

Other practice areas

If you do not do criminal or immigration work, exclude them explicitly. Broad match in legal is aggressive at finding adjacent areas.

Budgets in the UK Market

Small high-street firm — £600–1,500/month

Enough for one or two practice-area campaigns across a local radius. Private client and wills work is generally the most viable starting point at this level.

Established firm, competitive area — £2,500–6,000/month

Supports separate campaigns per practice area with proper conversion tracking. Necessary if competing in conveyancing or personal injury in a large city.

London costs substantially more

As with most UK categories, London and the South East carry materially higher click prices. A national benchmark will overstate costs in the North, Wales and Scotland.

Scotland is a separate legal jurisdiction

Different terminology, different processes and different regulation. English firms advertising into Scotland without recognising this waste budget and confuse searchers.

Track cost per instruction, by practice area

Not cost per enquiry, and never as a firm-wide average. Conveyancing and probate have entirely different economics, and an average conceals which one is losing money.

Common Mistakes

  • 1Advertising prices inconsistent with published information — Creates a transparency problem on top of a marketing one.
  • 2Headline fees that exclude disbursements — Damages trust at exactly the moment the client is deciding.
  • 3One campaign across every practice area — Different values, different searchers. Combined, the cheapest converting area consumes the budget.
  • 4Bidding outside the hours reception is staffed — Guarantees paying premium prices for calls that go unanswered.
  • 5Sending all traffic to the homepage — A divorce enquiry landing on a general practice homepage loses most of its intent.
  • 6Ignoring Google Business Profile — Free, appears above paid results for local searches, and reviews there feed directly into whether people call.

Nothing here is legal or regulatory advice. SRA transparency requirements are detailed and firm-specific — check the current rules and your own compliance position before publishing pricing in advertising.
