How to Choose an AI Ad Tool — Nine Questions That Separate Them

Adyft Guide

AI Advertising

Feature lists do not help with this decision, because every vendor lists the same features and the words mean different things to each of them. What does help is a set of questions with factual answers, most of which you can verify yourself before paying. These nine will eliminate most of the market in about twenty minutes, and the first two matter more than the other seven combined.

1. Does it launch into my own ad account?

The most important question, and the one people ask last.

If the tool runs ads from an account it controls, then your pixel history, custom audiences, conversion data and spend record belong to the vendor. Leaving means starting from zero — and that switching cost is frequently what keeps businesses in products they have outgrown.

💡 The right answer is that campaigns run in accounts you own, through the official Meta Marketing API and Google Ads API, with the tool granted access. Get it in writing before you connect anything, because it is very hard to unwind afterwards.

2. Does it take a percentage of ad spend?

Some tools and most agencies take 10–20%. That is a recurring tax on growth, separate from any subscription, and it creates a structural misalignment: your provider earns more when you spend more and nothing when you spend less.

Nobody is being dishonest. The incentive simply does not point where yours does, and it is worth knowing when you are next advised to raise budget.

3. Is targeting read from the platform, or shipped in the product?

A factual question with a factual answer, and it reveals more about engineering quality than anything on a feature page.

Meta exposes roughly 284 behaviours through its API and returns the same catalogue regardless of the country requested — country-specific entries sit inside one shared list. A tool with a hardcoded shortlist silently discards everything outside it, launches successfully, and targets less than it should.

We shipped this bug ourselves: a hand-maintained list of fifteen behaviours was discarding 161 of 177 selections for having no matching ID. The list had been written for one market, so that market looked fine and every other one ran without the signals that existed for it.

You can test it: build a campaign for a country the vendor is obviously not based in, and look at the audience. Generic interests with nothing market-specific means a hardcoded list.

4. Do the keywords come from real search data?

For anything covering Google. Ask whether keyword selection uses live Keyword Planner data through the official API, or whether a language model is asked what is popular. The second is common, because Planner access requires an approved developer token and guessing does not.

💡 Verify it in two minutes: take five suggested keywords into Keyword Planner with your country selected. If several show no volume or a dash, the list was generated rather than researched, and the campaign built on it will get almost no impressions for reasons nothing will explain.

5. Does it show me everything before it publishes?

This is a compliance requirement, not a control preference. AI writes the exact claims every advertising regulator restricts — superlatives, invented statistics, outcome guarantees, testimonial framing — because that is what persuasive copy looks like in its training data. The advertiser is responsible everywhere, and "the AI wrote it" has no standing.

A tool that auto-publishes has removed the only review step you had. One that previews every headline, image and audience keeps it, at a cost of about thirty seconds per campaign.

6. What does it do after the click?

For any business selling appointments, quotes or consultations, this is half the value and most tools skip it entirely.

Capture

Native platform lead forms complete materially better than landing pages, because nothing has to load.

Score

Ranking leads on stated budget, timeline, prior visits. Check which currency the budget test uses — a threshold in the wrong currency can be off by 85×.

Alert

Reaching a phone the moment a lead lands, not an inbox. Response time decides conversion more reliably than almost anything else.

7. Does it validate before launching?

Meta accepts a validate-only flag on ad set creation that checks a payload against the live API and returns real errors without creating anything or spending anything. A vendor using it catches budget violations, objective conflicts and creative rule breaches before your campaign does.

Running every payload combination through it found a launch-breaking bug in our own product that code review and over a hundred real-data comparisons had both missed. If a vendor has not heard of it, that tells you something.

8. What does it do without asking me?

A tool that publishes advertising, shifts budget or messages customers autonomously is making decisions you are accountable for. That may be exactly what you want — but it should be a choice you made rather than a default you discovered.

Ask specifically about live campaign editing, because every edit to a live ad set restarts the platform's evaluation of it. "Continuous optimisation" and "interference" look identical on a feature page, and a vendor who cannot distinguish them in conversation probably does not distinguish them in code.

9. What happens when I stop paying?

Campaigns built in your own account keep running and the data stays yours. Campaigns living inside a vendor's product do not. Ask what you can export, and whether the campaigns continue.

And one thing to ignore

Almost every vendor publishes performance statistics — percentage improvements, cost reductions, results multiples. None of them are verifiable and all of them are selected. They tell you nothing about what the tool will do for your business, and a vendor who leads with them rather than with how the product works is telling you which they would rather discuss.

💡 Judge on mechanism, not on claimed outcomes. A vendor who can explain exactly how their targeting is built and why is far more credible than one quoting an average improvement figure across customers you cannot see.
