To track WhatsApp button clicks in GA4, create a custom event that fires when the built-in “click” event has a link URL containing “wa.me” (or “api.whatsapp.com”), then mark that new event as a key event. Phone taps need a small Google Tag Manager trigger on links starting with “tel:”, and enquiry forms are easiest to track with a thank-you page. Once all three are set up and tested, GA4 shows how many real enquiries your website produces each month, not just how many people visited.
Why track WhatsApp clicks, calls and forms at all?
Visitor numbers tell you whether people arrive. They do not tell you whether the website is doing its job. For most small businesses the job is getting someone to message, call or send a form. A dental clinic in Bengaluru, a cleaning company in Dubai and a plumber in Manchester all care far more about “23 WhatsApp messages from the website this month” than about “1,400 visitors”.
Tracking these actions also tells you which pages work. If your “teeth whitening” page brings visitors but no WhatsApp clicks, while your “dental implants” page brings both, you know where to spend effort. And if you run ads, the same events let you judge ads on enquiries rather than clicks.
What do I need before I start?
- 1A GA4 property with the Google tag installed on every page of your site. Check Realtime in GA4 while you browse your own site; if you appear, the tag works.
- 2Enhanced measurement switched on (Admin, Data streams, your web stream). It is on by default and includes outbound link clicks, which is what makes WhatsApp tracking easy.
- 3Your WhatsApp button linking to a wa.me address, for example https://wa.me/971501234567 for a UAE number or https://wa.me/919812345678 for an Indian one.
- 4Your phone number as a tap-to-call link, which starts with “tel:”.
- 5Ideally, a thank-you page that the form sends people to after a successful enquiry.
- 6For phone tracking, access to Google Tag Manager, or someone who manages your site’s tags.
How do I track WhatsApp button clicks in GA4?
Because a wa.me link leads to a different website, GA4’s enhanced measurement already records each tap as a “click” event and stores the link address. You only need to turn those clicks into a named event of their own.
- 1In GA4, go to Admin, then Events (under Data display), and choose Create event.
- 2Name the new event whatsapp_click. Lower case with underscores keeps it tidy.
- 3Add the first matching condition: parameter event_name, operator equals, value click.
- 4Add a second condition: parameter link_url, operator contains, value wa.me.
- 5If some of your buttons use api.whatsapp.com instead, create a second event the same way with that value, or change the buttons so they all use wa.me.
- 6Save. The new event starts collecting from that moment; it does not fill in past data.
If your site uses Google Tag Manager, you can do the same with a Click URL trigger containing wa.me and a GA4 event tag. Either route works; just do not set up both, or every tap counts twice.
How do I track phone number clicks in GA4?
Tap-to-call links are not counted by enhanced measurement, so you need Google Tag Manager:
- 1In Tag Manager, open Variables and switch on the built-in Click URL variable.
- 2Create a trigger: type Click, Just Links, firing on some link clicks where Click URL starts with tel:.
- 3Create a tag: Google Analytics, GA4 Event. Enter your measurement ID (it starts with G-) and the event name phone_click.
- 4Attach the trigger to the tag, then use Preview to tap your number on a test page and check the tag fires.
- 5Publish the container.
Remember that this counts taps on the number, not completed calls. Someone may tap and hang up. It is still a good measure of intent, and it is the same measure for every page, so comparisons are fair.
How do I track enquiry form submissions in GA4?
The most reliable method for a small business site is a thank-you page. When a form sends successfully, the visitor goes to a page such as /thank-you, which nobody reaches any other way.
- 1In GA4, go to Admin, Events, Create event.
- 2Name it form_enquiry (or generate_lead, which is a name Google recommends for leads).
- 3Condition one: event_name equals page_view.
- 4Condition two: page_location contains /thank-you.
- 5Save, then send a test enquiry yourself.
GA4 also has a built-in form interaction option in enhanced measurement, but on many sites it misses forms or counts form starts as submissions. A thank-you page is simpler to trust.
💡 Three events cover almost every small business: whatsapp_click, phone_click and form_enquiry. Set up those three properly before you add anything else.
How do I mark these as key events (conversions)?
GA4 now calls conversions “key events”. Once each new event has fired at least once, go to Admin, then Key events (or Events, then the star or toggle next to the event name) and mark whatsapp_click, phone_click and form_enquiry as key events. They will then appear in your reports as results, and can be shared with Google Ads if you link the two accounts.
How do I test that tracking works?
- 1Open GA4 Realtime, then on your phone visit your site, tap WhatsApp, tap the phone number and send a test form. Within a minute or so the events should appear.
- 2For more detail, use DebugView (Admin, DebugView) together with Tag Manager’s Preview mode or the Tag Assistant browser extension; it shows each event and its parameters as they happen.
- 3Check each button on several pages, not just the home page. Buttons in headers and footers are sometimes coded differently.
- 4Expect standard reports to take up to a day or two to show new events. Realtime and DebugView are the place to test.
Where do I see the results each month?
In Reports, open Engagement, then Events, to see totals for each event. To see which pages produce enquiries, open Engagement, Pages and screens, and add your key events as a metric or use the key events column. Comparing a few months gives you a simple picture.
| Example business | Main event to watch | What a change tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Salon in Leeds, UK | phone_click | Which treatment pages lead to bookings by phone |
| Cleaning company in Dubai, UAE | whatsapp_click | Whether area pages such as Dubai Marina bring messages |
| Clinic in Pune, India | whatsapp_click and form_enquiry | Which doctors’ or treatment pages patients act on |
| Accountant anywhere | form_enquiry | Whether price and service pages bring real enquiries |
What are the common tracking mistakes?
- 1Counting the same click twice, by setting it up both in GA4 and in Tag Manager.
- 2Forms that show a message on the same page with no thank-you page, so nothing can be counted reliably.
- 3WhatsApp buttons that open a chat widget instead of a wa.me link, which the steps above will not catch.
- 4Forgetting to mark events as key events, so they never show as results.
- 5Testing only on a laptop, when most taps happen on phones.
- 6Not telling visitors about analytics in a privacy policy and, where the law requires, a cookie banner.

Questions about tracking WhatsApp, calls and forms in GA4
Does GA4 track WhatsApp clicks automatically?
Partly. With enhanced measurement on, a tap on a wa.me link is recorded as a general outbound “click” event. You need to create a named event from it and mark it as a key event to see it as a result.
Can GA4 track phone calls?
It can track taps on a tap-to-call link, using Google Tag Manager. It cannot tell whether the call connected or how long it lasted.
What is the difference between an event and a key event in GA4?
Every action GA4 records is an event. A key event is one you have marked as important, such as an enquiry, so it appears as a result in reports.
Why are my new events not showing in GA4 reports?
New events can take up to a day or two to appear in standard reports. Check Realtime or DebugView to confirm they are firing.
Do I need a cookie banner to use GA4?
It depends on where your visitors are. In the UK and EU, analytics cookies generally need consent. Check the rules for your country, or our guide to cookie banners for UK businesses.
Does Adyft Sites set up GA4 tracking?
Yes, on every plan: GA4, the Meta pixel, and tracking of calls, WhatsApp clicks and enquiry forms are set up as part of the build.
