There are three ways to get a business website. A website builder is cheapest in money and most expensive in your time. A web designer or agency gives you a custom result at the highest price and a long wait. A done-for-you service sits in between: a fixed price, a short wait, and almost none of your time. Which is right depends on how much you value your hours, how fussy you are about the design, and who you want to look after the site afterwards.
What are the three options, in plain words?
- 1Website builder: you pay a monthly subscription, pick a design, and put in the text, photos and settings yourself. You are the designer, writer and technician.
- 2Web designer or agency: a person or a company designs and builds a site for you, usually with a quote, a few rounds of feedback and a launch some weeks later. You normally provide the words and photos.
- 3Done-for-you service: you answer a few questions, and the provider writes the pages, builds the site, hosts it, secures it and makes small changes for a set monthly fee. You review and approve.
There is no universally best choice. There is a best fit for your situation, and the differences are mostly about time, risk and who does the boring work afterwards.
How much does each option cost?
These ranges come from published UK and US price guides (2026). Your own quote may fall outside them, so treat them as a guide to what is normal.
| Website builder | Freelance designer | Agency | Done-for-you | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| UK, 5-page information site | Roughly $15 to $40 a month, plus your time | £1,500 to £3,000 (some guides £500 to £4,000) | £3,000 to £5,000 | Fixed setup plus a monthly fee, from £999 + £49 a month at Adyft Sites |
| US, small business site | Roughly $15 to $40 a month, plus your time | $500 to $2,500 | $2,000 to $6,000 | Fixed setup plus a monthly fee, from $1,499 + $69 a month at Adyft Sites |
| UAE | Roughly $15 to $40 a month, plus your time | From about AED 999 | AED 8,000 to 25,000 | From AED 3,499 + 199 a month at Adyft Sites |
| India | Roughly $15 to $40 a month, plus your time | ₹2,999 to ₹8,750 for a basic site | ₹12,500 to ₹60,000 | From ₹14,999 + ₹999 a month at Adyft Sites |
Look past the headline number. With a builder, the subscription is the small part. With a designer, the quote often leaves things out. UK guides note that copywriting is usually not included, at about £50 to £150 a page; hosting is another £50 to £300 a year; ongoing maintenance £300 to £1,200 a year; and basic search setup £300 to £1,000. A £2,000 quote can become £3,500 once those are added.
How much of your time does each option take?
This is where the biggest gap is, and where owners underestimate most.
A builder gives you a blank page with a pretty frame. Writing five good pages, choosing and editing photos, setting up a domain, email, forms and basic search settings, and checking everything on a phone is a project of days, not hours, for someone doing it for the first time. If your time is worth £30 an hour and the project takes thirty hours, the “free” site cost £900 before you paid for the subscription.
A designer takes less of your time, but not none. You will usually need to write or supply the text, gather photos, attend a briefing call, answer questions, and give feedback on two or three drafts. Slow replies on your side are the most common reason a six-week project becomes four months.
A done-for-you service asks the least of you: an hour or so of answers, then a review. That convenience is the reason people pay for it.
Which option gives the best quality?
Quality means three things here: how good it looks, how well it is written, and how well it works on a phone and in search results.
A builder’s templates are well designed. What lets a builder site down is usually the content. Thin pages, stock-style wording, photos that do not match, and no clear next step. The tool is fine; the owner is untrained, which is not a criticism.
A good designer produces the most distinctive look and can build something unusual: custom layouts, brand work, special features. A poor one produces a template with your logo on it, and you cannot tell the difference until later. Ask to see sites they have built, and phone one or two of those owners.
A done-for-you service trades some uniqueness for consistency. You get a clean, tested layout and every page written for you. You will not get a one-off brand experience, and a good provider says so honestly. For most local businesses, a clear page with the phone number in the right place wins more customers than a clever design.
Who updates the site afterwards?
A website is not finished at launch. Opening hours change, prices rise, a new service appears, a plugin needs updating, a certificate expires. Ask this before you pay anyone.
| Website builder | Designer or agency | Done-for-you | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small text and photo changes | You, any time | You if they gave you an editor, otherwise a paid request | The provider, within the monthly fee |
| Security and software updates | The builder company | You or a paid maintenance plan | The provider, included |
| Hosting and uptime | The builder company | Separate hosting bill | Included in the monthly fee |
| New pages | You write them | A new quote | Added to your plan or quoted simply |
| If something breaks at 9 pm | Support queue | Hope your designer answers | The provider fixes it |
The answer “my nephew will do it” works until he gets busy. Whoever will do the updates should be written down before the site is built.
Who owns the website and the domain?
This is the question that causes the most pain later, so ask it plainly and get the answer in writing.
- 1The domain name (your-business.com) should be registered in your name, with your email as the contact. If a provider registers it in their name, they can hold you to ransom or lose it.
- 2The text and photos you pay for should belong to you. Check the contract says so.
- 3On a builder, the site usually lives inside the builder. If you stop paying or leave, you may lose the design, even if you keep the domain and your text.
- 4With a designer, find out whether you get a copy of the files and the logins, and who is paying for the hosting.
- 5With any done-for-you service, ask what happens if you cancel: can you take the domain, the text and the content with you?
At Adyft Sites the domain is registered in your name, around £10 to £15 or $12 to $20 a year. The content is yours. We say this here because it is a fair test to apply to every provider you speak to, including us.
💡 Before you pay anyone, ask three things: who writes the words, who looks after the site next year, and whose name is the domain registered in.
Which option suits which business owner?
A website builder suits you if
- 1You enjoy this kind of task and have a few spare evenings.
- 2Your budget is very tight and your time is genuinely cheap right now.
- 3You are testing an idea and expect to change it often.
- 4You are happy to learn about domains, email, forms and search basics.
A web designer or agency suits you if
- 1You need something genuinely custom: a strong brand, unusual features, a complex layout.
- 2You have the budget, usually from £1,500 up in the UK, and can wait several weeks.
- 3You have the words and photos ready, or will pay a writer.
- 4You can name someone who will handle updates after launch.
A done-for-you service suits you if
- 1You run a local business: a trade, a clinic, a restaurant, a salon, a small firm.
- 2You are busy with real customers and do not want a side project.
- 3You want a fixed price, a fast launch and the words written for you.
- 4You prefer one monthly bill that covers hosting, security and small changes.
What are the downsides of done-for-you?
Fairness requires saying this too. A done-for-you service uses proven layouts, so your site will not have a completely original design. You will not get unusual custom features unless they are quoted separately. You are relying on the provider to stay in business and answer messages. And there is a monthly fee for as long as you want the service to look after things.
In return, you do not write, build or maintain anything, and the total cost over the first year is predictable. Compare it to the full cost of the alternatives, including your time, rather than to the lowest price you have seen.

Questions about choosing how to get a website
Is a website builder cheaper than hiring a web designer?
In cash, yes. A builder is roughly $15 to $40 a month. But the work takes many hours of your time, and the result is only as good as the words and photos you supply. If your time is worth money, the real saving is smaller than it looks.
How much should a small business website cost?
Published UK price guides (2026) put a five-page information site at £1,500 to £3,000 from a freelancer and £3,000 to £5,000 from an agency, before copywriting, hosting and maintenance. In the US, a small site is $500 to $2,500 from a freelancer and $2,000 to $6,000 from a small agency.
What does done-for-you actually mean?
The provider does the work: they ask you questions, write the pages, design and build the site, host it, keep it secure and make small changes. You review and approve rather than build.
Can I switch from one option to another later?
Yes. Your text, photos and domain can move with you if they are yours. That is why ownership matters: make sure the domain is registered in your name and your content is yours before you start.
Which option is best for SEO?
None is automatically better. What matters is clear pages about what you do and where, written for real searches, on a fast site that works on phones. A designer, a builder or a done-for-you service can all deliver that, or fail to.
What if I need an online shop later?
Pick a provider who can grow with you. Shops add login, admin and payment features that a basic site does not have, and they cost more. See our guide on whether you need a shop or just a website.
