Western advertising assumes a website: click, load, fill or check out. Across much of Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America that chain has one fewer link — the ad opens a WhatsApp conversation and the sale is agreed in the thread. Meta supports this properly. What it does not do is warn you about the four specific ways the setup fails without producing an error.
What the objective actually does
A Click-to-WhatsApp ad replaces the website destination with a chat destination. Tapping the button opens WhatsApp with your business number and usually a prefilled first message. Crucially, Meta optimises for conversations started rather than link clicks — so it learns toward people who actually open a thread instead of people who tap and leave.
That optimisation is the whole value. A traffic campaign pointed at a wa.me URL buys you taps. A proper Click-to-WhatsApp campaign buys you conversations, and the quality difference is large.
The four silent failures
1. The leading zero
A number written locally as 098765 43210 or 050 123 4567 must become +91 98765 43210 or +971 50 123 4567. Keep the zero after adding the country code and you produce a number that does not exist. The ad runs, the button appears, every tap lands on nothing.
💡 This is the single most common reason a click-to-chat campaign produces zero conversations, and it is invisible in every report — nobody complains, they just give up. Tap your own ad preview on your own phone and confirm the chat opens to the right number. Ten seconds, every campaign.
2. The Page is not linked to WhatsApp
Meta requires the Facebook Page running the ad to have a WhatsApp number connected in Page settings. Without it the campaign fails at launch with error 2446886, which reads like a generic permissions problem and sends people hunting through the ad account. The fix is in Page settings.
3. A video creative cannot carry the link
Genuinely obscure, and it blocked a paying customer of ours sixteen times across two nights. On an image creative, a WhatsApp call-to-action accepts a value containing a link parameter. On a video creative the identical value is rejected — code 105, subcode 1815630, described only as "number of parameters exceeded". The real reason appears nowhere except a localised message buried in the response.
Because image creatives accept it, the bug stays invisible until the first video ad. If your tool has never been tested with a video click-to-chat ad, assume it will fail.
4. Per-card links on a carousel
A carousel can give each card its own destination, which is excellent for a shop. On a click-to-chat campaign it is a trap — writing a web link onto a card replaces the chat destination with a web page, and the campaign quietly stops being a WhatsApp campaign. Any tool offering per-card links must skip them when the destination is a chat.
What it costs, with real numbers
From a campaign we run, rather than an industry average:
₹9.39 per click
2,349 impressions, 21 link clicks, ₹197 spent.
0.89% click-through
Lower than a traffic campaign — expected, because you are buying a narrower and more deliberate action.
First conversation
Within the first few thousand impressions.
💡 Do not compare this against a traffic campaign's click-through rate and conclude it underperforms. On the same account in the same week, a traffic campaign ran at 5.65% and ₹6.31 a click and delivered 28 page views that spoke to nobody. For a business that sells by talking, the more expensive click was the better buy.
Set up the receiving end first
A conversation you paid for and left unanswered for four hours is worth less than no conversation. Two things help, both free and both set inside WhatsApp Business rather than in the ad:
- 1A greeting message, so nobody is met with silence. It buys you time and signals somebody is there.
- 2Icebreaker prompts — tappable opening questions — so the person does not face an empty text box. Many people open the chat, see nothing to say, and close it.
And make the prefilled message specific. "I saw your ad about the weekend offer" tells whoever answers which campaign produced the lead. "Hi" tells them nothing and starts the conversation from zero.
Who this suits, and who it does not
Strong fit
Clinics, salons, real estate, coaching, tour operators, interior designers, contractors — anywhere the price depends on the conversation, or the customer needs to ask questions before committing.
Weak fit
Fixed-price products sold from a working website with a checkout. A conversion campaign to the product page will beat this, because the platform can see and optimise toward the purchase.
Depends
High-consideration products — furniture, electronics, anything where people want to check availability first. Worth testing both.
A working checklist
- 1Objective: engagement, optimised for conversations started. Not traffic to a wa.me link.
- 2Number: full international format, country code present, leading zero removed, verified by tapping your own preview.
- 3Page: WhatsApp number connected in Page settings before launch.
- 4Creative: if video, no link parameter on the call-to-action.
- 5Budget: above the platform minimum for the objective, per ad set.
- 6Receiving end: greeting message and icebreakers set.
