What Pages Should a Small Business Website Have? The Essential List and What Goes on Each

Adyft Sites Guide

Website Guides

A small business website needs five pages to start: Home, Services, About, Contact and one page that shows proof of your work. Add a separate page for each service and each area you cover only when you have something real to say about it. Everything below explains what goes on each page, in plain words, so you can write it yourself or brief someone who will.

How many pages does a small business website need?

Fewer than most people think. A visitor to your site is trying to answer three questions: what do you do, can I trust you, and how do I reach you. Every page you add should help answer one of those. A page that exists only because other websites have one makes the site harder to use and harder to keep up to date.

Here is a practical way to think about size. Five pages is enough for a local business that sells a few services in one area. Around fifteen to twenty-five pages suits a business with several distinct services or several towns. Fifty or more makes sense for a business with many services, many locations, or a lot of useful advice to publish. Start at the size you can fill with real content, then grow.

Site sizeWho it suitsWhat it usually contains
5 pagesOne person or a small team, one main offer, one areaHome, Services, About, Contact, and a proof page
10 to 25 pagesSeveral services, or two to five townsThe five above plus a page per service and per area, and a few guides
50 pages or moreMany services, many branches, a lot to explainA full set of service, area and advice pages, each written for one search

The home page: what goes on it?

Your home page is a signpost, not a brochure. Someone who has never heard of you should know within five seconds what you do, where you do it, and what to do next. Keep it short.

  • 1A headline that says what you do and where, such as “Emergency plumber in Leeds, open 24 hours”. Skip slogans.
  • 2One clear button near the top: Call, Book, or Get a quote. Pick one main action.
  • 3A short list of your main services, each linking to its own page.
  • 4Two or three real reviews or a line about how long you have been trading.
  • 5Your phone number, opening hours and the area you cover, visible without scrolling far.

Look at how a trade site lays this out in the plumber website template. The first screen carries the phone number and the promise, and everything below it supports that. A restaurant works differently: the restaurant website template puts the menu and a booking button first, because that is what hungry people came for.

What should the services page include?

This is the page that earns the enquiry. List each thing you sell, with a short plain description of what the customer gets. Say who it is for, how it works, and what it costs, or at least what it depends on. Owners worry about publishing prices, but a range such as “boiler service from £85” filters out the wrong enquiries and attracts the right ones. If you really cannot give a number, say what changes the price.

One page for all services is fine to begin with. Once a single service brings you real work, give it its own page (more on that below). The dentist website template shows this well: a short overview of treatments, and a separate page for each one people search for by name.

What do I write on the About page?

People buy from people, especially for services done in their home or on their body. The About page is where you say who is behind the business. It is often the second most visited page on a small site.

  • 1Your name, a real photo of you or your team, and how long you have worked in this trade.
  • 2Why you do this work, in two or three honest sentences.
  • 3Qualifications, memberships and insurance, with the registration number if you have one.
  • 4Where you are based and the area you serve.
  • 5One thing that makes you different, if it is true. Do not invent one.

Regulated trades should be careful here. A solicitor website must show who is regulated and by whom; a gas engineer should show their registration. Visitors check this, and so do the people who regulate you.

What should a contact page have?

Make it effortless. The most common mistake is a contact page with only a form. Many customers would rather call, send a WhatsApp message or find your door.

  • 1Phone number that works with one tap on a mobile.
  • 2A WhatsApp link or email address next to it.
  • 3Your full address, a map, and parking or transport notes if people visit you.
  • 4Opening hours, including bank holidays if they differ.
  • 5A short form with only the fields you need: name, phone or email, and a message.

Whatever you put here, answer the messages. A beautiful contact page that leads to a reply three days later is worth less than a plain one that gets a reply in an hour.

What is a proof page, and do I need one?

Yes. Proof is the page that lets a nervous stranger relax. Depending on your business, it can be a gallery of finished jobs, a set of before and after photos, a list of customer reviews, or a few short case studies. A florist shows arrangements; a cleaning company shows a kitchen before and after; a gym shows the space and the classes.

Only use real work and real reviews, with the customer’s permission. Made-up testimonials are easy to spot and can get you in trouble with advertising rules. If you have no reviews yet, ask your last five happy customers for one this week and publish those. A small amount of real proof beats a long page of vague praise.

💡 Five pages written for real customers will outperform twenty pages written to fill space. Add pages when you have something true and specific to say.

Which extra pages are worth adding?

After the core five, a few pages quietly do a lot of work. None of them are required on day one.

PageWhat it is forAdd it when
FAQAnswers the questions you hear every week, which saves you phone callsYou get the same five questions repeatedly
Pricing or packagesShows what things cost and what is includedYour prices are fairly standard
Privacy policyTells people what you do with their details; required if you collect themAlways, from the start
Menu, treatments or catalogueA browsable list of what you offerYou sell many items or dishes
Blog or advice guidesHelps people find you for questions they searchYou can write useful answers regularly
CareersAttracts staffYou are hiring

The FAQ, Contact and Privacy pages are free on every Adyft Sites plan, since almost every site needs them and they should never be the reason a budget is blown.

When should I add a page for each service?

Add a service page when people search for that service by name and you want to be found for it. A person who types “boiler repair” wants a page about boiler repair, not a general page that mentions it in the third paragraph. A dedicated page lets you explain the job, show your work, give a price range and answer the questions specific to it.

A good test: could you write at least 300 honest words about this one service, using things you actually know from doing it? If yes, it deserves a page. If you would be repeating the same words as the page next to it, it does not.

Trades and clinics benefit the most. An electrician might have separate pages for rewiring, fuse boxes, EV charger installation and safety certificates, as the electrician website template shows. A beauty clinic might have one page per treatment, as in the beauty clinic website template.

When do area pages help a local business?

If you serve more than one town, a page for each can help people in those places find you, and it helps them see that you really work near them. This is local search at its simplest: someone types the service plus their town, and a page about exactly that tends to do well.

The catch is that area pages must be real. A page for each town with the same text and the town name swapped does little for visitors and search engines notice. Mention actual streets or districts you work in, jobs you have done there, journey times, and anything particular about the local housing or rules. If you cannot say anything true and specific about a town, leave that page out.

This is often where the jump from a five-page site to a twenty-five page site comes from: the same five core pages, then a service page for each main job, then pages for the towns you cover most. A cleaning company covering six neighbourhoods is a typical example, and the cleaning company website template shows the structure.

What should every page have, whatever its topic?

  • 1One clear heading that says what the page is about.
  • 2A next step: call, book, or message, so nobody reaches the end with nowhere to go.
  • 3Short paragraphs that read well on a phone, since most visitors will be on one.
  • 4Your real details: name, number, area. Not stock text.
  • 5A title and description that a search engine can show, written for people.

Questions owners ask about website pages

How many pages should a small business website have?

Five is enough to start for a local business with one main offer: Home, Services, About, Contact and a proof page. Grow to fifteen or twenty-five when you have several services or towns, each with real things to say.

Do I need a separate page for every service?

Only for services people search for by name and that you can explain with real detail. If two services share the same words, keep them on one page until one of them grows.

Do I need a blog?

No. A blog helps only if you will write or commission useful answers on a regular schedule. Five good guides on the questions customers ask you are worth more than fifty thin posts.

What is the most important page on my website?

For most local businesses it is the home page, then the Services and Contact pages. But the page that actually closes the sale is often the one with proof: reviews, photos of finished work, and clear prices.

Do I need a privacy policy page?

Yes, if you collect any personal details, including through a contact form, and nearly every site does. It should explain in plain language what you collect and why. On Adyft Sites the Privacy, FAQ and Contact pages are included free on every plan.

Can I start small and add pages later?

Yes, and it is usually the better route. A smaller site is faster to launch and easier to get right. Adding pages later is normal, and most good sites started that way.

Tell us about your business, we write the pages

Answer a few questions on WhatsApp. We choose the pages, write every one, build and host your site, and keep it updated. Starter sites are ready in under seven days.
